This event will walk through the whole process and answer participant questions. Tracks recorded in the demos will be made available for attendees to download and use at home. Notes from the session and a recommended reading list will be available for download.

Drum setup and tuning

Mic Placement

Phase issues between mics. How to minimize bleed or use it. Standard Multi Mic or Glyn Jons. Snare and Kick. Room mics. Classic mic choices. Cheaper options that work.

Levels and Tracking

Complete soundcheck process. Gain staging and EQ. Compression options. Once we’ve completed the setup we’ll record several different drum grooves with Gary. We’ll talk about managing click tracks and headphone mixes…   and avoiding click bleed.

Percussion and Overdubs

GG is a master of aux percussion. We’ll hear his thoughts on how these work in the song structure. Short discussion about percussion instrument and micing technique. Creative ideas for add lots of percussion options to a song.

Drum Edits

Learn the concepts. We’ll look at group comping the best take and warping individual hits. The importance of phase alignment between tracks. How sample replacement or layering can happen.  This will be demonstrated in Nuendo but all DAWs will be able to do the same thing.  It’s the workflow and concepts first.

Drum Mix

A crash course through typical setup for mixing each part of the kit and the drum bus. Gate, Compression, EQ, Levels and Pan for each channel. How to manage the Overheads. Drum bus setup, compression, and verb.

It’s a long day and a lot of stuff.
