Charlotte Symphony / WDAV
Contracted to engineer the WDAV live broadcast of the Charlotte Symphony in concert. Goal of the project was to create a broadcast quality recording of their live performance and to mix this for live radio broadcast.
CLASSICAL SERIES
Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5
October 10 & 11, 2025 | 7:30 PM | Knight Theater
In the series opener, a lively work by Mason Bates kicks off a program of striking contrasts, setting the stage for Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto. By turns biting, brooding, and darkly humorous, the concerto reveals the composer's signature defiance -- a quality that often put him at odds with Soviet authorities. Finally, the towering Fifth Symphony, written in the shadow of Stalin's oppressive regime, unfolds with gripping drama and raw emotion, evoking both resilience and a deeply rooted connection to his Russian homeland.

Case Study
There are no second takes in live recordings OR in live radio broadcasts. We partnered with WDAV staff to combine our resources into a functional on-location recording and mixing system.
Produced by WDAV staff, veteran concert producer Bruce Scott provided oversight and guided mic placement to the radio’s preferred methods. The WAV Lab provided the digital mixing backbone with redundant multitrack recording systems, and made custom CAT6 cabling to manage the 300ft run from catwalk to the temporary control room and 130ft hop from catwalk to stage. Engineering the live broadcast required a playback system for pre-recorded cues and quick turn-around of the CSO new sonic logo recording.
